Climate World – 2011 Exhibition: Figures and Facts

It is common knowledge that organization of the international specialized exhibition, Climate World, consists not only in creating conditions for manufacturers and suppliers to demonstrate their HVAC&R novelties or providing means for communication and making deals or holding workshops and panel discussions but also in performing laborious task of statistics survey. Analyzing data received during the exhibition, we could reveal strong and weak points of its organization, take them into account next year as well as make a conclusion regarding the state of the HVAC&R industry in whole and predict its development for a year.

So, what are the statistical data for Climate World – 2011?

Let’s start with the number of participants (see Table 1, first line), the parameter that indirectly reflects the condition of the sector. The greatest number was observed in the pre-crisis year of 2008. Slight decline of 2009 is explained only by the fact that many companies had made their participation fees before the crisis broke out. In 2010 many long standing participants faced a matter of survival which led to a quite understandable drop. Are there any reasons to regard 300 participants of the 2011 exhibition as a sign of the crisis end in the sector? On the one hand, the exposition area (see Table 1, third line) in 2011 actually did not fell short of the pre-crisis figures. On the other hand, by visitors number (see Table 1, second line) Climate World – 2011 left behind the exhibition of the good 2008 drawing a quarter larger audience than in the prime time of the pre-crisis. Not surprisingly that the amount of participants satisfied and very satisfied with number of visitors reached 88 % in total.

In addition to it, only 38 % visitors visited previous editions, in other words more than 60 % of visitors of 2011 were new.

In part the interest to the HVAC&R industry that enhanced after abnormal heat of 2010 is to ‘blame’ for it. And then, growth of visitor number resulted from efficient steps of organizers towards attracting visitors, which is reflected by the fact that 74 % participants were satisfied and very satisfied with exhibition advertising and its mass media coverage.

One way or another, the popularity of Climate World – 2011 means that the sector woke up and came out of the crisis. In parenthesis, the building sector has not recovered yet and now is gaining momentum.

Decrease in number of participating countries (see Table 1, line four) as compared to previous years is explained very simply. Most probably, not all foreign companies keep abreast of the sector state and many of them mechanically regard 2011 as a crisis year. Whether this assumption is correct, we will know only next year.

By the way, about geography.

Climate World organizers are often reproached that too few visitors from Russian regions participate in the exhibition. One would think that statistical data are evidence of it. But let us make an effort to comprehend the meaning of ‘1.47 % of visitors represent the Urals.’ One per cent and a half of 21,000 amounts to three hundred people or, for example, two hundred companies from this region. The Urals is not Moscow, so the number of participants of the regional HVAC&R market is unlikely to exceed these two hundred. Taking into account the sizes of regional markets, we come to the conclusion that they are well represented.

Let’s have a look at positions occupied by Climate World – 2011 visitors.

About 30 % of them are heads and directors of specialized firms. Adding this number to 7.29 % of engineering directors and 16.2 % of top-managers and discipline heads, we get 52.6 %. More than half of visitors or almost 11,000 people are senior managers! And please, remember that it is a conservative figure, since nearly half of 20.55 % of managers do not identify themselves as top-managers because of many reasons.

On the whole, Climate World has always been notable for a very small number of casual visitors, and 2011 is no exception. More than 90 % of participants are driven by professional interest.

Only 8 % of visitors were not specialists and it's an overrated figure: some of unemployed at that point of time came to the exhibition to find job at HVAC&R companies and even people attributed to category ‘Other’ visited the exhibition intentionally.

Let’s look at the resulting data.

Only 6 % of participants reported from 0 to 50 prospective business relations entered into at the exhibition; the majority of respondents indicated number from 100 to 1,000. A good many of cautious participants (42 %) that answered ‘We’ll see what will happen after the exhibition’ is not to confuse us. First of all, many of respondents observed the old Russian tradition ‘not to put the evil eye upon’, and, secondly, they didn’t have enough time to collect and consolidate business contact data during the exhibition. The just picture is 79 % participants satisfied with the exhibition organization and 93 %, with results, and this picture makes it possible to estimate the number of prospective contacts, qualitative composition of visitors and the probability of a company’s participation in the exhibition of 2012.

63 % participants of the 2011 exhibition decided to participate in Climate World – 2012. We could bet that the absolute majority of the rest 37 % made the same decision just two weeks later.
